AquaSize
AquaCrackle™ is a professional quality crackle material that is applied over AquaSize™, a glue-like material that is the first step in the AquaCrackle™ system. This superlative two-part system is designed to offer consistent results and a variety of crack patterns using a few simple tools and techniques. The AquaCrackle™ method allows the user to create the illusion of a weathered painted surface that has literally cracked away from its substrate due to years of age.
Basic Application:
- Seal the work surface by applying 2 coats of AquaSeal™ or AquaBond™. Allow to dry a minimum of 1- 2 hours depending on the drying conditions.
- Apply an even coat of AquaSize"' to the areas to be cracked. Allow the size to dry approximately 15 - 45 minutes until tacky, about the consistency of flypaper.
- When the size is ready, apply a full coat of AquaCrackle™ material with a brush, sponge, roller or sprayer. Be careful not to overwork the crackle material into the AquaSize™ however, be sure to apply a full heavy wet layer. Cracking will occur in about 30 minutes as the material dries.
- Dry thoroughly.
- Apply a coat of ColorSeal™ to protect the crackle especially if a color glaze will be applied over the crackle.
- For a final protective clear coat apply an additional coat of ColorSeal™ over any glaze work.
- Additional clear coats of AquaGard™ or AquaThane™ may also be applied as needed when extra durability is needed.
Tips:
- If larger cracks are required, apply double coats of AquaSize™, allowing each layer to dry to a firm tack. Then apply a thick, generous coat of the AquaCrackle™ material. Finer cracks are achieved by applying one thin coat of the crackle size and a lesser amount of AquaCrackle™.
- Tack time for the size will depend upon the thickness of the layer, humidity and airflow.
- To avoid sags and runs on vertical surfaces, apply two thin coats of AquaSize™.
- Always make a sample to ensure the desired results.
- Different tools will create different patterns. Brushing the AquaCrackle™ in a directional pattern will create longer, narrow alligator cracks. Sponging or bagging the AquaCrackle™ will create a random pattern.
