CrackleMate™ is a clear paint additive that transforms Aquabond™, other Aqua Finishing Solutions™ products and ordinary Latex wall paints into a crackle medium that can be applied over AquaSize™ with beautiful results. This versatile material is formulated to allow for greater latitude in customizing crackle mixtures. Many decorative crackle patterns can be obtained by varying the CrackleMate™ mixture ratios and application methods.

Basic Application:

  • Prepare the work surface by applying 2 coats of AquaSeal™ or AquaBond™. Let dry for 2 1/2 hours, depending on the drying conditions. Apply an even coat of AquaSize™ to the areas to be crackled. Allow the size to dry 15 - 45 minutes until tacky.
  • Mix 20 - 30% CrackleMate into AquaBond™ or AquaColor™. When using flat latex paint, thin the paint with 20 -30% tap water before adding 20 - 30% CrackleMate™. Make sure to mix well. In general do not exceed 50% CrackleMate™ when adding to any paint material.
  • When the AquaSize™ is ready; apply a full coat of the CrackleMate™ mixture with a brush, sponge, roller or sprayer. Do not overwork the CrackleMate™ mixture into the AquaSize™.
  • Allow to dry thoroughly before applying a coat of clear ColorSear to seal in the crackle. Before glazing or top coating make sure the ColorSeal™ layer is completely dry.
  • Apply another coat of ColorSeal over any color glazing, and then if more durability is desired apply a coat of AquaThane™ for lasting resistance to scuffing and wear.

Tips:

  • Adding CrackleMate™ to AquaColor™ creates a cracked glaze effect. This finish must be top coated for durability.
  • When adding to ordinary latex paint, results may vary depending on the brand of paint and the amount of CrackleMate™' added.
  • Lizard and snakeskin are examples of crackle patterns that can be obtained by blotting a mixture of AquaColor™ and CrackleMate™ over AquaSize™

Mixing Ratio

  • Roughly 4 to 1. Mix roughly 1 Gallon of CrackleMate™ to 4 Gallons of Paint.
