Sandstone
Sandstone™ is water based acrylic paint that incorporates special sand-like particles, without the abrasive quality of natural sand. Formulated to create a sandy texture on walls and furniture, it is also used as a basecoat in the production of faux marble and stone. Sandstone™ can be scraped to bring out the color of the embedded stone particles hidden within the product or sanded to produce a smooth sandstone finish.
Basic Application:
- Make sure that the surface is well sealed. lb ensure that there is a good seal, apply two even coats of AquaBond™, AquaSeal™, SetCoat™ or an oil based paint. Allow to dry thoroughly.
- Apply the first thin coat of Sandstone™, using a brush, roller or spray unit. A first coat that is too thick may crack. For spray applications use a large fluid cap of at least 100 thousandths diameter in order to prevent clogging. Let the material dry a minimum of 4 hours. At the end of this time, check the bond with the substrate before proceeding. Further drying may be necessary depending on the conditions in the work area.
- Apply 1 -2 more layers allowing 1 - 3 hours to dry between coats.
- Let the entire finish dry approximately 24 hours, then sand smooth using 120 grit sandpaper to create a beautiful stone-like finish.
- If desired, apply an appropriately colored glaze to further enhance the stone effect.
Tips:
- Tint with AquaColors™. FauxCreme Colors™ or commercially available colorants made for water based products
- For exterior applications, topcoat with AquaThane™ To create a smoother marble-like finish, apply thin coats of tinted VenetianGem™ Plaster. Once the material has dried, scrape(using a stainless steel trowel) or dry sand (using 400 - 1200 grit sandpaper). This will shine the VenetianGem™ Plaster and expose the embedded sand particles creating a more interesting texture.
- For spray applications, thin the product with up to 20 - 25% water.
- Always prepare a sample to ensure desired results.
